(Jan 98) Looking east at the lower level building slab (preschool rooms) area ready for footings and foundations to begin. The lines on the soil are the layout for the concrete footings to be dug on January 12th. The lengths of steel rod in the right corner are to be used to reinforce the building foundations. |
(Jan 98) Another shot of the lower level (preschool rooms) prepared building pad. The deeper excavated hole in the foreground is in preparation of the elevator shaft and adjacent equipment/electrical rooms which are situated lower than the surrounding floor area. |
(Jan 98) Workers are preparing the reinforcing steel for the concrete footing pour. The lengths of reinforcing steel are actually fabricated to an exact plan indicating where each is to go in the footings and how they are to be assembled together to work properly. |
(Jan 98) These are the first concrete footings being cast on site. They will support the walls of the lower level Preschool Classrooms addition. The footings and foundations of a building are not the prettiest part of the building, but they are key to the continued life and success of the building. Here concrete is being cast on undisturbed earth and around the reinforcing steel which supplies additional strength to the concrete footings. |
(Jan 98) After the concrete footings are cast in place and given time to harden (cure), concrete blocks are laid and mortared in place, to extend those foundations up to the eventual floor line. The foundations and footings begin a minimum of 3' below the adjacent outside grade elevation to protect them from heaving during a deep frost. Here the walls are being built up over the recently-poured footings. |
(Jan 98) This shot shows the waterproofing membrane being applied to the buried surface of the Preschool Classroom area walls. The rubber-like membrane is applied to keep moisture from penetrating the walls underground and leaking into the building. |
(Jan 98) Several truck loads of large diameter pipe have arrived. These will go under the parking lot and will provide a storm water run-off control system. |
(Jan 98) The last remaining section of the Breezeway has just been demolished exposing the original west facade of the Sanctuary building. Crews are pouring concrete footings at the upper level with the use of a concrete pump. The pump allows quicker and easier placement of concrete in hard-toreach areas or in muddy conditions. |
(Jan 98) While this winter has been very mild with varing temperatures, it has also been very wet, with rain during most weeks in January. During the earlier construction stages, wet weather wreaks havoc on construction schedules since you often lose time on the rain days and for several days afterward. |
