Mission News: Backyard Tsunami

Published in the News & Views: May , 2005

Going out to serve Everyone knows of the huge tidal wave that devastated the countries on the coastline of the Indian Ocean. We have seen lands laid waste with tremendous loss of life. We have also seen the outpouring of the love and concern for people thousands of miles away when the whole world contributed to the relief efforts through funds, food, prayer and the message of hope in Jesus Christ.

If, we in the body of Christ can do this for a people on the other side of the world, what can also be done for those in inner cities? We, too, have a tsunami on hand, but it did not come with crashing waves and engulfing floods. No, this storm has been gathering for years, largely ignored until recently when it threatens to overwhelm us all.

Devastation has already taken its toll on the lives of our young people, families, and neighborhoods in connection with drugs, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion and murder. Just as the people of God gather to reach out in Southeast Asia, the same can be accomplished right here locally, in our own backyard.

All have been given a gift for ministry with burdens for a need. "Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them..." Romans 12:6. As we come together, united in purpose, we may begin to have significant Christ-focused influences for positive change and hope for our young people. As we contemplate the all too apparent waves of destruction, crashing in on our city and taking a devastating toll on our youth and young adults, we as a people need to take a stand.

Are you willing to invest your time, and your expertise? The future of our youth and our society hangs in the balance. Please join us.

  • Many: have the talents and skills necessary to educate or equip someone who needs a new direction in life (tutors, advisors, apprenticeship programs, etc.)
  • Some: have the means to support by "adopting" a young man or woman, to assist that person with some need to help him or her succeed (the little things that show love; a backpack, coat/jacket, a night out, etc.)
  • All: can pray. Help us complete a 24/7 prayer band praying for this ministry and others who are reaching out in the city and state with the love of Christ.

We are convinced that the downward spiral of self-destruction can be curtailed.

Tsunami Response

Central has been receiving messages from World Relief and Christian Aid in response to our inquiries about sending people to assist with relief efforts in southeast Asia. The present situation is that there is more than can be properly processed already in motion and additional workers are being discouraged.
