Mission News: God's Green Acre! (Woodberry Crossing)

Published in the News & Views: April 16 , 2006

Going out to serve What do a farm in Parkton, MD and inner city families have in common? Residents from low income/high population/non-traditional family structure areas of Baltimore City come to Woodberry Crossing, a 100-acre farm in Baltimore County. There they encounter pastures, cultivated fields, dense woods and flowing streams. They find themselves leaping into a swimming pool or petting and feeding a variety of farm animals. A wonderful, safe space to run, jump and play!

City-bound adults and children get a glimpse of God's wonderful world beyond the confines of the concrete city. Learning in a setting surrounded by nature's beauty is an eye-opening experience, allowing for a new perspective to emerge. It becomes easier to look at old habits and consider a different pattern. Through the interaction with a variety of leaders, confidence grows and individuals feel empowered by positive experiences.

Read what 8th grader, Brittany, had to say to Woodberry's founder and director, Beth Bryant. "Mrs. Beth, words cannot explain what a blessing and a role model you've been to me. It was a real hard winter and spring for me. And my faith was declining. Being at your farm during the summer really helped me and encouraged me. And all I want to say is THANK YOU!"

Woodberry Crossing has nurturing relationships with a number of Baltimore-based agencies and churches, such as Franciscan Center, Mc Kim Center, The Door, Foundations of the Faith Church, New Covenant Church and Sarah's Hope Outreach Center. Central has been blessed by the ministry of M&M Kids and parents helping with the summer program, as well as individuals who have been staff during July and August. Handyman Centralites have built a barn and a worship center on the property.

You can visit anytime, but April 22nd between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm is the annual SPRING FLING, a fun-and-fund-raiser for Summer Camp. Lots of activities and good food! Details are available at www.woodberrycrossing.org or call Jean Pollitt.
