Going out to serve By Phyllis DeSmit

Having worshipped at Central while in medical school at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Richard Bransford left for Africa in the 60s. As a general surgeon, he was not entirely prepared for the needs which surfaced in Kenya. Poverty there leads to poor pre-natal care, which leads to a variety of abnormalities in newborns. Dick tells of operating with a nurse at his side reading instructions from a medical journal. The ensuing years have resulted in the establishment of Bethany Kids Rehab and Rehabilitation Center in Kijabe, focusing on the care of disabled children.

The Bethany hospital wards are full of patients dealing with issues of hydrocephalus, spina bifida, club feet, cleft palate and burn contractures. The little ones and their Moms have a lengthy stay due to the necessity of repeated surgeries and the follow-up rehab. They are cared for by Christian staff who often love them into God's kingdom. These efforts continue to open doors in the lives of those who have little access to know about Jesus.

Besides being an exceptional surgeon, Dick has an ongoing vision for Bethany Kids as there is so much to be done in serving the disabled. In recent months, a nearby property has come for sale. The 250-acre piece is unique in Kenya, as it has numerous natural springs providing an abundance of water. Profits from the water bottling business would help subsidize the care of disabled children.

Dick's dream is that this location will house a rehab center to help disabled children move to a greater level of performance medically and spiritually. Camps for the disabled and another hospital could be created. This area could also become a research and training center for medical and spiritual workers from all over the developing world, allowing them to return to their home countries to serve disabled children.

Dick has been describing this dream to friends of his ministry. As of this week, he has in hand or pledged 95% of the $550,000 necessary for the down payment which is due on August 31. A major donor has offered to cover the remaining cost of the property once the down payment has been made.

Though money is the current focus, Dick writes, "The real goal is to see the lives of disabled children remarkably changed. Ultimately this brings glory to God through providing more care for more of His children. This will further manifest itself by drawing more and more kids and their parents into the Kingdom of God."

Please pray for the fulfillment of Dick's dream. An amazing vision!
