What Are We To Think About Harry Potter?

Last week's sermon mentioned, but did not solve, the controversy within Christian circles over the Harry Potter movie and books. Pastor Cooper (who read the first book to better understand the issues) encouraged parents to be spiritually discerning, to know what their children are reading and to follow their consciences as to whether their children should be allowed to read them. He also encouraged parents not to judge other parents who come to different conclusions than their own. To children, his advice was clear: Obey your parents!

If you would like to learn more about the issues and perspectives involved, the Internet is the easiest place to find the information. If you do not personally have internet access, you can find free access at any Baltimore County Public Library. Below are a few links you can follow.

If your children do read the books, it is best to read with them. With about half of all children having read one of the books, some parents find that familiarity with the books allows them to use the story for teaching and evangelism.
