Mission News: "Passion" Spawns Passion

Published in the News & Views: October 31, 2004

movie poster Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" film has become the greatest seller ever in all of the Middle Eastern countries. Many people verbalize that their viewing is motivated by their hatred of Israeli Jews. Muslim audiences are shocked by the message, "Love your enemies! Forgive them!"

In Kuwait, the film is so popular that theaters cancel other films in order to show it. In Qatar, a missionary reports, "In two hours, more Qataries heard the gospel than I have been able to reach in 5 years. The Arabic sub-titles were completely accurate." A Moroccan believer saw a pirated DVD of the film and said, "The Aramaic that Jesus speaks will be largely comprehended without sub titles." Even in Saudi Arabia, which has no movie theaters, vendors report that they cannot keep pirated DVDs in stock.

Muslims are taught that it was not Jesus who was crucified, but it was Judas who was mistakenly crucified in His place. We can pray that many Muslim viewers will grasp the truth and believe in the atoning sacrifice of God's Son. Pray also that Christians living in the Middle East will be guided by the Holy Spirit as they respond to inquiries.
