CPC 1996 Annual Report:
Youth Ministries
Edwin H. Olson

"And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." - Luke 2:52

Kyle Powderly, as Interim Youth Director, led the youth in the way and example of Christ during his term of service. In August, Kyle answered God's call to the Gospel ministry, packed his earthly belongings, and started classes at Princeton Theological Seminary.

Paul knew the value and impact that young people can have as disciples of Christ and godly examples. That is why he wrote young Timothy and said, "Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe" (1 Tim. 4:12). The same exhortation holds true today for the youth here at Central Presbyterian Church.

In January, our youth participated in Souper Bowl Sunday and collected donations for Love & Action. In February, they took part in the 30 Hour Famine in the fight against world hunger. In March, high school students attended Impact '96, where they strengthened their commitment to Christ and discipleship.

Jesus continues to be the model of Central's youth ministry, as the Youth Committee, parents and leaders provide many opportunities for our young people to grow and serve the Lord. A strong foundation of support was laid in September at our Concert of Prayer, as parents and youth advisors prayed for our children and ministry needs. Parents are becoming more involved in all phases of ministry to youth; and this is very much welcomed and appreciated.

At the November Lock-in, our middle schoolers learned the importance of a self-image rooted in the love and power of Christ. At the Krislund retreat, United We Stand, our high schoolers offered many ideas for a growing impact of love and service in 1997. In December, both groups visited nursing homes to minister to the residents by singing Christmas carols and greeting them in the name of Christ.

New service and leadership opportunities are planned for the coming year, including SouperBowl Sunday, the 30-hour Famine, retreats, and church service events. Preparation is already underway for a summer missions project to Jamaica to work with the deaf. There, we will help build a village for the hearing impaired and reach them for Christ. We look forward to more students assuming the mantle of leadership in the youth programs and in the call to win their friends to Christ.

All in all, 1997 looks to be a year full of promise as we labor together in the Lord and seek to rise to a new level of what God seeks to do with this ministry. Sola Deo Gloria!
