Youth '99 Missions Trip to Tunica, Mississippi
June 26 - July 3, 1999
This summer our senior high youth group will be traveling to Tunica,
Mississippi to serve with Adventures in Missions.
We will be sharing the love and Good News of Jesus Christ through ministries of
construction and evangelism. Read below about the community in which
we'll serve, and check back periodically as we prepare for another
eye-opening summer of ministry.
Project Profile
Tunica:
Long known for the racial segregation that has split the town of Tunica
in two, Tunica County made headlines several years ago as the poorest
county In America. Few black families live above the poverty level, but
the newly formed Ministers' Association believe that spiritual riches
are in store for Tunica in 1998. Pastor Paul Husband (who is white) and
Pastor Rodney Hibbler (who is black) have a passion to fulfill the Great
Commission and to bring racial reconciliation to Tunica. After attending
a PromiseKeepers Rally in
Memphis in the fall of 1996, Hibbler and
Husband believed the Lord was calling them to help bring the black and
white pastors in Tunica County together to fulfill the Great Commission.
The result was a newly formed Ministers Association of five black
pastors ;and four white pastors who meet weekly in an Experiencing God
Bible study. Subsequently, they began to plan an outreach effort
together. Christ is at work in uniting the ministers as He breaks dawn
the walls that have separated the races for so long. The pastors have
invited AIM to partner with them to bring about racial reconciliation in
Tunica County.
Ministry:
Teams will engage in ministries such as home repair, evangelism and VBS.
Home repair includes everything from scraping, painting, and laying
floors, to installing insulation. Our objective is to show Christs love
by raising the standard of living for those living in poverty. Teams can
share Christ through sports evangelism, friendship evangelism while on
work sites, and door-to-door evangelism. Be prepared to visit the
elderly and minister through music, drama and worship at the Tunica
Convalescent Center. Also, several buses will pick up more than 100
grammar school children and bring them to the missions center for your
Vacation Bible School.
Housing and Food:
Groups will be housed in a youth center. Participants will need to
provide their own sleeping bags and air mattresses. Food will be
prepared at the center.
Transportation:
Groups will need to provide their own transportation to, from and during
the project.
Other:
Your team can choose among the following off-day options: A tour of
nearby Memphis, a picnic at a local reservoir, or a steamboat ride dawn
the Mississippi.
