John Celebration Letter

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Dear Friends,

After 17 years of ministry here at Central Presbyterian Church, Pastor John and his wife, Debbie, will be retiring effective June 30, 2020. Their last Sunday at Central will be June 28. To show our love and appreciation and to carry out Pastor John’s passion for neighborhood ministry, we are planning a celebration event called Block Party, on Friday, May 1, 7:00-8:30 PM at Central. We will also have an All-Church Picnic, Sunday, June 14, 12:00-2:00 at Central’s Pavilion.

The last pastor transition of this magnitude for Central occurred nearly 20 years ago. Times change and the biblical model for leadership transition are different than the cultural norm. Departing leaders like Moses and Joshua challenged their congregations to complete what they were called to do and to remember their promises to continue serving the Lord. Pastor John is challenging us in much the same way. He would like to encourage Central and St. Moses to continue our ministry to the immediate community by establishing an outreach fund to provide extra resources to group efforts at Central and St. Moses to support neighborhood hospitality events and service opportunities. This fund will be named in honor of John Russell, a young man with big dreams who had a passion for neighborhood ministry and serving our communities, and it will be called the John Russell Outreach Fund (JROF). More detailed information on this legacy fund can be found www.centralpc.org/celebrate . The Block Party will be both a celebration and a time for John to share his vision for this ministry.

Tax-deductible gifts to the JROF can be made online www.centralpc.org/jrofund or by mailing checks to Central, c/o the JROF, 7308 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21204.

On a personal note, we would also like to present John and Debbie a gift of appreciation at the picnic from their friends for their many years of service at Central and “Beyond These Walls.” John and Debbie have a dream of taking their entire family to Japan, a place that played such a vital part in the formative years of their ministry. We hope you can participate in this dream—no gift is too small.

Please remember that, because this gift is for personal use, these donations are not tax-deductible. If you have questions about this gift, please contact Art Moorshead or Jesse Gardner. Please send donations by May 31. Checks can be made out to and sent to:
