Kathy Welsh Smith—A Faithful Presence

As the Director of Discipleship, you can see Kathy Welsh Smith on Sundays moving between the Connection Central desk, helping moderate the online chat for the contemporary service, and keeping an eye out for newcomers or people who haven’t been to church for a while.

Her job description includes discipleship, congregational life, and care, which she describes as a faithful presence that shares the gospel. “To me, a faithful presence means asking, ‘How are we following Jesus?’” Kathy said. “I start with our small groups and other programs at church, and then think about how we can be a faithful presence with our friends, family, and neighbors to help with their needs—sometimes invisible.”

With the help of dedicated volunteers, she is responsible for the Welcome Teams and the Connection Central Team, which are designed to warmly welcome visitors and members each Sunday. She develops and nurtures small groups and other activities that support discipleship such as the annual church picnic, supporting the Marriage

Workshop, the new members class and even decorating for Christmas. Her next project is developing a volunteer team to host groups that use our building to create a stronger connection with our fellowship.

Before joining the Central staff, Kathy worked at InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, which is active on college and university campuses. She has been a member of Central for more than 30 years and has been on the staff for more than six years. She is married to Rob Smith, who is a former elder and is involved with the Presbytery. They have two adult children and two grandchildren.

If that’s not enough to keep her busy, she is working toward a Master’s of Divinity degree at United Theological Seminary and said she has many opportunities to use what she is learning in her work at Central.
