We are thankful we haven’t experienced any serious security issues at Central Presbyterian Church; however, a recent study by the Family Resource Council revealed that incidents at places of worship doubled from 2022 to 2023. While the numbers are still relatively small (436 incidents in 2023), it’s a reminder that a solid security plan is a smart and necessary precaution.
Several years ago, we took steps to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who walks through our doors by setting up a security team to be prepared for any incidents that might arise. Every Sunday, this dedicated group monitors security cameras, patrols the building, and keeps an eye on things from the Central Welcome desk.
Barry Salter leads the team and shares that their main goal is simple: ensuring everyone stays safe. Barry said, “We want to ensure the team stays aware, that the children’s area is well-monitored and can be quickly locked down if needed, and that we stay connected with each other and local authorities.”
Barry is joined by team members Rick Ferree, Ed Knight, David Crockett, Beth Schmidt, and Bob Wolf. Members of the team have attended Baltimore City Police training and work closely with our door greeters, ushers, deacons, and the Connection Central staff to ensure that everyone is looking out for one another.
“We want to be a welcoming and safe space,” Barry emphasizes. “Sometimes, we’re the first point of contact for someone needing assistance from the deacons, and we’re always ready to respond to any concerns.”
Both Barry and Beth joined the team with a desire to contribute to the life of the church. “I trained at work to respond to active shooter situations and other security incidents,” Beth explains. “I saw that this training was relevant and valuable for helping to protect our church family.”
David Crockett, who’s been on the team for three years, joined after asking how he could get involved. “People really appreciate us,” he says. “They often thank me for being here, and it’s nice to know we’re making a difference.” Ed Knight recently joined the team and said, “It’s a necessary service and it’s a great way to connect with other members.” Bob Wolfe said “it’s a great way to be involved in service to the church.”
Thanks to our Security Team’s hard work and dedication, we can continue to gather, worship, and grow in a safe, caring environment. We’re grateful for all they do and encourage everyone to stay aware and connected. If you want to join the team, contact Barry Salter at bwsalter@comcast.net.
