Central’s Sunday Greeters Open Doors and Hearts

The Ministry of a Smile: Meet Central’s Sunday Greeters

When you walk through the doors of Central Church on a Sunday morning, you’re likely to be met with a friendly handshake, a warm smile, maybe even a hug. But what you may not realize is that behind each of those greetings is a heart full of purpose—a volunteer who sees Sunday morning not just as a time to worship, but a time to serve.

For this special group of greeters, welcoming others isn’t just a task—it’s a joy.

“I’ve always been a social person,” says Sharon Gatewood, one of our longtime greeters. Sharon’s roots at Central run deep—she’s served as a deacon, and her late husband Don was an elder. Becoming a greeter was simply another way to give back. “I enjoy making people feel welcome, meeting new people, getting hugs, and making everyone feel at home in God’s house.”

For Chidinma Ojeme, greeting is a family affair. Often joined by her daughter Deborah, she sees their role as meaningful, not just practical. “A smile and a greeting can mean a lot to someone,” she says. And truly, who among us hasn’t been uplifted by a simple act of kindness at just the right time?

Martha Momoh’s story reminds us how powerful hospitality can be. She first came to Central as a visitor, accompanying someone she was caring for. That visit made such an impression that she’s now one of the first smiling faces you’ll see when you arrive. Despite working night shifts, Martha still shows up each Sunday morning full of energy and warmth. “I really enjoy making people feel welcome and helping them be part of God’s fellowship,” she says.

Then there’s Godwin Dixon, whose quiet words speak volumes: “The Lord told me it is better to be a greeter in the Kingdom of God than to be a rich man on earth. This is a service that shows people God’s love.”

Mark Dininno said “It’s important for every person to be recognized and made to feel welcome.”

Each one of these individuals, and so many others who serve in this ministry, helps create the special atmosphere that makes Central feel like family. Their faithful smiles, outstretched hands, and generous hearts remind us that sometimes the simplest acts—offering a hello, remembering a name, sharing a hug—are the most powerful forms of ministry.

To all our greeters: thank you. You don’t just open doors, you open hearts.
