Following the shut down of the U.S. refugee program in January 2025, the Welcome Corps Team at Central shifted their focus from seeking to support The Moket family in their immigration from Malawi to supporting World Relief to house and support refugees who arrived just prior to the stoppage and loss of funding.
During this period, Central raised around $75,000 to support the World Relief Baltimore programs and individuals. Several Central members were able to provide home set-ups for three families who arrived just prior to the shut down and were un-housed in February and March.
The needs now are for individuals to come alongside these newcomers as they transition to life in Baltimore, including helping with English conversational skills, helping with resume writing and job applications, driving to medical appointments, supporting families in navigating public schools, and learning about shopping and transportation. World Relief provides and requires volunteer training and a background check online.
While the Central Welcome Corp team is saddened to lose the opportunity to support the Moket family’s move to Baltimore, we continue to pray for them. Upon hearing the program was paused, in faith, the Moket family embraced a continued stay in the Dalawi Refugee Camp and sought out how they could make their ministry with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) grow at this time.
They are seeking to purchase a vehicle to allow them to broaden their ministry in transporting widows and other residents to and from church, transporting YWAM participants to and from the airport and other needs. They have already raised $2,000 and need another $4,000 to $5,000 to make the purchase. We are hoping to raise the funds to cover this. We are humbled by their faithful response to the disappointment as they had anticipated living here in Baltimore with us by this time.
