Volunteer Spotlight: Carolyn Smoes

As you step into Central Church this week, take a moment to enjoy the beautiful flower gardens that greet you. The blooms near the Pavilion are especially colorful at this time of year.  These gardens have been lovingly maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers over the years, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone who passes by. The butterfly garden near the preschool playground, donated by Kim Barnes, is a particularly vibrant spot, drawing both people and pollinators.

A community effort lies behind these flourishing gardens. Longtime member Carolyn Smoes has been a key part of this ministry for over 40 years, but she hasn’t worked alone. Many hands have contributed to the care and beauty of the grounds, including volunteers like Karen Wolf, Ellen Wallace, Jessica Clark, Cheryl Belitsos, and the late Andrew Brooks, who shared a love for roses with his wife, Carolyn. Their contributions have helped create an environment that reflects the warmth and care of the congregation.

In addition to the gardening, volunteers like Sherry Peterson have stepped up to arrange flowers for special events and funeral luncheons—a compassionate way to serve those in need of comfort. The work of maintaining and beautifying Central’s grounds goes beyond just gardening; it’s about creating a space that feels like home for all who come through the doors.

No green thumb? No problem! Volunteers don’t need any special skills to get involved in this ministry—just a willingness to lend a hand, enjoy the outdoors, and work alongside others. It’s a great way to stay active, connect with nature, and serve the church community. Central’s Green Team, of which many gardeners are a part, also works on how to better steward the grounds with environmental care in mind.

If you’d like to help with the gardens or learn more about the Green Team, feel free to contact Carolyn Smoes or Richard Ames-Ledbetter. There’s always room for more people to join this shared effort, and the results bring joy to everyone who visits Central Church.
