Volunteer Spotlight: Kim McCaughey

Several afternoons a week, the halls of Central Church echo with the cheerful presence of Kim McCaughey. As an office assistant, Kim’s dedication extends beyond mere tasks—it’s about making a difference. This year, she also co-led a small group at WOW (Women on Wednesday), adding yet another layer to her contribution.

“When I’m in the office, whatever the staff needs me to do is my job description,” she said with a smile.  She said her work is ever-changing—from stuffing programs for an event to helping find decorations for the revitalization of the library. “I like to take the more time-consuming projects off the staff’s plate,” she said.

Kim’s journey to office assistant was not a direct one. Before retiring from her job at a law firm where she managed facilities and operations, Kim coordinated the Central welcome desk volunteers on Sundays. After retiring, she spent time visiting other churches and then decided to come back to Central.

“I wanted to volunteer again, but I’m busier on the weekends than I am during the week, so I asked Kathy (Kathy Welsh Smith, Director of Discipleship) how I could help during the week, and helping in the office is a great fit.”

Her colleagues can’t speak highly enough of her contributions.

The timing of her joining the team was a true God send, as we’ve had some staff changes and schedule shifts, and Kim has stepped in to fill some significant gaps. We’re so grateful for her capable dedication and support!”

“Kim LOVES to organize! She’ll take on anything from a spreadsheet budget, to the whole kitchenette, to the church picnic and Deck the Halls, to keeping me headed in the right direction,” said Kathy.

“Kim is simply amazing! With her incredible ability to administrate, and top-notch executive function skills, she has been a true blessing to the ministry of Central. The timing of her joining the team was a true God send, as we’ve had some staff changes and schedule shifts, and Kim has stepped in to fill some significant gaps. We’re so grateful for her capable dedication and support!” said Ray Almsteadt, Sr. Director of Communications & Technology.

“Kim brings the sunshine with her every time she walks in the door. It would not be the same around here without her,” added Cindy Yost, Operations Coordinator.

Kim said her volunteer work is reflected in a favorite Bible verse—1 Peter 4:10: Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

“I find that administrative tasks use the expertise I developed during my career, and it’s good for the brain to stay active during retirement,” she said. “I think I’m getting as much as I’m giving while volunteering.”

Kim McCaughey’s story is a testament to the impact one person can have on a community, and her dedication continues to inspire everyone at Central Church.
